Was This Town In Mexico? No! It was in Louisiana!

Saturday, July 31, 2010 - Richard Thornton

The Troyville Archaeological Site (Jonesville) was a major town in the Lower Mississippi Basin that was densely populated between around 400 AD and 1100 AD. Most of its mounds were always platform mounds for buildings, not burial mounds.

Therefore, the town appears to have been one of the primary locations where the Mississippian Culture evolved.  It once contained a massive mound that even when abandoned for a thousand years, was still 82 feet high and therefore the second highest known Native American mound. >>>more

Army Corps of Engineers officials are conducting their periodic five-year inspection of the Tensas Basin Levee District system this week and next for the first time since the corps issued new criteria for acceptable levees in 2006.

Though the inspection is extensive, it's separate from the inspection that will determine whether the system can be re-accredited by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. That inspection, which is also taking place this summer, will determine whether property owners protected by the levees would be required to buy expensive flood insurance. >>>more

Mayor Hiram Evans Announces His Bid for Re-election

Therefore, I would like to see much of the work that we have already started come into being and continue to work on behalf of the town.  As I am seeking your support for re-election, I now want to share with you just a little of what we have done since January 2007. >>>more

Mike Wilson Makes Formal Announcement for Mayor

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 - David W. Ryan

Former Jonesville Mayor Mike Wilson has chosen to formally announce his candidacy for Mayor of Jonesville through this media. Catahoula Life took this opportunity to ask the mayoral candidate about his platform and what lies ahead for the Town of Jonesville.

What has made you decide to throw your hat in the ring at this time?
As most of you know, I successfully ran for mayor approximately eight years ago. We succeeded in accomplishing a lot of good things in those four years, but at the end of my term in office, I felt there were many more important tasks that needed to be done. So now nearly four years later, there is still much unfinished business to attend to, in order to get this town back on solid ground. >>>more

Catahoula Life Offers Political Advertising

Thursday, July 22, 2010 - David W. Ryan

First I would like to say congratulations to all 38 candidates who qualified and a very early Christmas wish for all of those who are running unopposed. To those of you who drew opposition and those opposing, I would like to say good luck and to let you know if you want to get your message out 24/7 you can do so on CatahoulaLife.com.

This is my first year with CatahoulaLife.com and a political season. I did not want to clutter up the site with political ads but I do need the revenue. So here is what I am proposing. I will run a free announcement along with a picture free of charge. Or if you prefer just a thank you for those not drawing opposition. >>>more

Making Wise Choices Makes Life Easier

Have you ever pondered what the most repetitive thing that we do is? Think about it. We make choices. Many of them require no conscious thought. From what time to get up, to what time to go to bed, we are always making decisions.

In the overall scheme of things, what we have for breakfast or what outfit we wear to school, work, or play probably won't matter much. Decisions that determine our happiness, the success or failure of our lives on Earth, and our final destination are of utmost importance. >>>more

A Little Name Dropping and Mr. Tornado

Saturday, July 17, 2010 - David W. Ryan

Friday night coming back from Harrisonburg covering the big Triangle, CCI, McCartney court case, I stopped off on Elliot Road to visit Chris Ryan and family. When I got ready to leave, it had started to rain hard, then really hard; but I hurried out to my car anyway.

Of course, I got drenched but worst of all – my feet were wet and can’t stand for my feet to get wet. Anyway, I slowly and clumsily get my car turned around and headed to Highway 124.

I get to the highway ready to drive up and turn left and I honestly can’t see five feet in front of me. I sit there maybe 30 seconds trying to decide if maybe I should return back to Chris’ house or push on. Suddenly, as if the wind wasn’t blowing hard enough, I was hit by this hard gust of wind, quickly followed by another. Debris was raining down and hit my car with thuds and clanks. >>>more

Thursday, July 15, 2010 - David W. Ryan

The plan has been laid. The time to act is now. For all of you who have asked how you could help us keep CatahoulaLife.com going, here is your opportunity to help.

I have never wanted to have a subscription based website. I think it would limit too many readers and the best thing we have going for advertisers is the 2,500 plus page views we average on CatahoulaLife.com everyday.

But I knew going in advertising was not the answer – it would need help. So after much consideration, I have decided to let individuals sponsor Catahoula Life for $30 per year. In return we give you the most complete and comprehensive news and information in and around Catahoula Parish. The plan is to get better and faster with the kind of information you need and want. >>>more

By Thursday morning they were all done, and the cabinets look like new. Anything the Hamiltons do is top quality work, for Mr. Tom learned long ago that good work would get him recommendations for future jobs. They stay booked up year round, so I was lucky to get them to come down here to do this job for me. Excellent job, beautiful cabinets, happy Alma. >>>more

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 - Karen L. Willoughby, Baptist Message

CROWLEY, SICILY ISLAND, MONROE/WEST MONROE, CALHOUN – In his famous "I have a dream" speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. articulated his hope that one day character would matter more than ethnicity. Some have been content to simply wait for the Civil Rights leader's vision to materialize.

There are pastors in Louisiana, however, who have decided to do something to make Kings's dream a reality.

“This area has been controversial between races over the years,” said James Gass, pastor for the last three years at First Baptist Church of Sicily Island, in Ouachita Baptist Association. “My hope was that if nothing else, this crusade would bring us together on common ground, and I believe it did.” >>>more

Jonesville Belles Fall in the Finals to Winnsboro 3-0

Saturday, July 10, 2010 - David W. Ryan

Live by the sword – die by the sword is an old metaphorical expression the Jonesville Belles played with. The Belles rode the “small ball” to three consecutive wins including an impressive 3-2 win over host Winnsboro. However, in the end, they lost using “small ball” as Winnsboro came through the losers bracket to win the District 5 tournament 3-0 over Jonesville Thursday night.

“After the first three games out small ball just completely left us,” Head Coach Micah Hughes said. “We couldn’t lay down a good bunt when we needed it and our base running inexperience really caught up to us. We made more errors tonight that we did in the rest of the tournament combined.”>>>more

Alma M. Womack: Poetry Leaves Lasting Memories

Friday, July 9, 2010 - Alma M. Womack

When I was a little girl, I loved to read poetry. Free verse was unknown to me, for poems were stories that rhymed, and if they didn't rhyme, they weren't poetry. It is easy and simple to be a child and have absolute convictions of right and wrong, proper and improper, without any alien ideas messing up an orderly little world. (Some would say I never left that world.)

I read all types of poetry, but was especially seized by those poets who told us to buck up and get on with life. Rudyard Kipling was one of the leaders of this particular type of poetry, along with Edgar Guest, another favorite. They believed there was no point wasting time longing for what never was or what might have been, just get on with life. >>>more

Theresa Carpenter: A Cowboy Mother's Highs and Low

Thursday, July 8, 2010 - Troy Turner, The Daily Times

It's hard to keep a good cowboy down.

So if that's the case for a good cowboy, imagine how tough a good cowboy mom can be.

Most of you locals easily should remember Corbin Carpenter, the kid who almost got killed here in Farmington during the 2008 National High School Finals Rodeo.

The Louisiana bull rider was critically injured when he was slammed to the ground and then stomped by a bull, leaving Corbin paralyzed and dangerously close to death as doctors worked to save him both in the arena and then at San Juan Regional Medical Center.

But this column isn't just about Corbin Carpenter.

It's mainly a tip of the hat to his mother, Theresa Carpenter, who is living quite the storybook rollercoaster life herself. >>>more

Jonesville Belles Play for District Championship Tonight

Thursday, July 8, 2010

The Jonesville Belles dropped their game last night to Rayville 3-1 which created a three way tie for the finals tonight in Winnsboro. Coach Micah Hughes pulled the lucky straw however and his team will sit back and wait to face the winner of Winnsboro-Rayville which play at 6 PM. The Belles will face the winner of the earlier game for the right to move on to the state tournament being held in Oakdale this year.

“We just had too many missed opportunities at the plate and on the bases,” Coach Hughes pointed out. “We left eight runners on base and continue to just missing laying down bunts.”

Micahla Hughes and Nikki Harbor led the offense with both going 2/3, with Hughes adding a triple and Harbor added a double. Kassidy Gunn and Whitney Taunton were the only others to pick up a hit. Defensively Coach Hughes said Harbor played spectacular running down two bloopers in left field from her shortstop position and throwing to first to double off the runners. Lacee Book and Emilee Smith came on in relief and allowed no runs.

Coach Hughes said pitching wise, with the bye; his team should have everyone available.

“This is winner-takes-all now, so we really hope our fans will come out and support this group of girls who are fired up and ready to win a district title for Catahoula.”

Does it mean the security, peace, prosperity, and opportunity that we have enjoyed for so long in the greatest country in the world? Maybe it is a combination of all of these things.

Laws are in place that restricts certain practices while the Constitution guarantees others. Perhaps we have taken our freedom for granted for much too long. >>>more

Mayor Evans: Notice to Jonesville Residents

Thursday, July 1, 2010 - Mayor Hiram Evans

LETTER TO EDITOR: Let's Never Forget Our Heroes

Wednesday, June 30, 2010 - V. Ross Ratcliff

What a wonderful article and statement made to Congress by Rep. Alexander.  It is a great loss to lose a man like Mr. Craddock. While this year's increase of one percentage point -- from 64 percent in 2009 to 65 percent in 2010 -- is modest compared to last year's four point boost, the successive 2009 and 2010 gains are notable considering that for the three previous years the measurement of student achievement grew in total by only one percentage point, from 59 percent in 2006, to 60 percent in 2007 and 2008. >>>more

He always left early enough that if he had a flat, he would have time to fix it and still arrive at work on time. I don't know if he ever had a flat, but he allowed the extra time "just in case." After work, he drove the long drive home each day. He never complained about having to work or the long drive. Most workers today would not believe his work ethic. >>>more

Sign This Petition to Reduce Drilling Moratorium

Sunday, June 13, 2010 - Bobby Jindal, Govenor, State of Louisiana

We urge you to join our campaign to insist the White House and U.S. Department of Interior shorten a six-month moratorium on offshore drilling that will have a devastating effect on Louisiana’s families, businesses, and local and state economies.

The offshore drilling moratorium will be devastating to our Gulf Coast region, where hundreds of thousands of residents work in jobs that service the oil and gas industry.

The impacts we are suffering from the BP oil spill are bad enough; the moratorium will cause massive layoffs and cripple our economies like never seen before, and we will likely feel the impact for years.

Please act quickly to institute offshore safeguards, reduce the drilling moratorium to 30 days, and get us working again to fuel this nation!
