Block High Dazzlers Complete Summer Dance Camp

The Block High School Dazzler Dance Team of 2010-11 completed a summer dance camp with instructor Jessica McClure, former Colonel of the Tomball Charms Dance Team of TomBall, Texas.  Jessica is the daughter of Charles and Kerri Jerrigan McClure, both Block High School graduates. 

The dance camp was held at the Block High School cafeteria and auditorium on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 thru Thursday, July 8, 2010. Jessica taught 6 dances to the BHS Dance Team; many of which she choreographed herself. The dances included hip hop, pom, and kick routines. 

“They were hard workers,” Jessica said of the dance team girls. “I really worked them pretty good at times and it was a challenge teaching them six dances in such a short amount of time. However, they came back each day wanting more.”

Jessica said the girls loved the hip-hop dances a lot and she was especially proud they would be using a dance routine she choreographed to Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.

Ms. Susie Swayze, Dance team sponsor, stated that Jessica was a great dancer and instructor.  “The girls loved Jessica as a person and loved the dance routines.  She brought a fresh approach to many of the dance routines the girls learned.  She is a very motivated young lady, not only in dance, but in all other areas of her life.  We hope to make this summer camp with Jessica an annual event.” 

Awards presented at end of camp ceremonies included:  Most Outstanding Dancer, Abbey Ryan; Best Free-Style Dancers, Caroline Keeth and Molly Swayze; Most Improved Dancers, Jasmine Jefferson and Allison Taylor; Most Spirited Dancer, Vontresia Barber; and Best “Mover and Shaker,” VaDesha Sadler.

Members of the 2010-11 BHS Dance Team include:  Vontresia Barber, Shea Boothe, Marleina Hawthorne, Jasmine Jefferson, Rae’Ven Jones, Caroline Keeth, Captain; Shuqunna Mayes, Elizabeth Pitts, Victoria Pitts, Abbey Ryan, Co-Captain; VaDesha Sadler, Molly Swayze, Co-Captain; and Allison Taylor.

Prior to taking pictures at the 4-Rivers Park Dazzlers were attacked by some bumblebees. Here Vontresia Barber uses her flip-flop to defend herself from one of the bumblebees (in the red circle) while here teammates try avoid the flying flip-flop.
