Block Cheerleaders “Superior” at Cheer Camp
Sunday, July 25, 2010 - David W. Ryan
Block High School Cheerleaders were clearly “Superior” during their recent Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) cheer camp July 12-15 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, Texas.Â
“Our girls were evaluated throughout the week on dances and cheers they were taught,” Cheerleader sponsor Joni Davis explained. “They were presented with the highest ribbon, Superior, on each evaluation.”
Mrs. Davis also noted there were a total thirty-one cheer squads in the competitions which included sixteen varsity squads. Block cheerleaders were in the varsity squad division (which included co-ed) and still brought home a 3rd place in Home Pom Dance and 3rd place in Extreme Routine.
“These girls just worked so hard every day from 8:15 in the morning until 10 every night,” Mrs. Davis said. “I am so very proud of each one of these girls and the way they present themselves and represent our town and our school.”
The girls were allowed to play in the onsite water park for about two hours each day. Mrs. Davis said the cheerleaders looked forward to this time of bonding each day, and were ready for three more hours of practice after enjoying the water park.
“Cheerleading is a very demanding sport and is considered the most dangerous of all sports,” Mrs. Davis said. “Cheerleaders are not only taught cheers and sideline chants, but also must learn dances, stunts, jumps, and, most importantly, how to be leaders both on and off the field.”
While at camp six girls competed for the All-American team. There were over 350 girls at camp and only 35 girls were chosen.
This number was broken down further by grade level: Freshmen and under; Sophomores and Juniors; and Seniors.
The girls from Block competed in the Sophomore and Junior division with 40 girls trying out in that division. Only about 10 were chosen in that division.Â
Block cheerleaders trying out for All-American were: Drew Key, Jordan Davis, Blakelynn Colclasure, Cydnie Cooper, Maura Cooper, and Megan Duncan.
“Each of these girls gave a performance with no mistakes but only Drew and Blakelynn were chosen as All-American, “I am very proud of all of these girls. They worked really hard and represented Block High School with pride.”
For the girls selected Drew and Blakelynn noted: “It is fun but very stressful trying out for All-American.”
“Once you get up there and see the judges, I don’t know if the adrenaline kicks in or what but you just perform,” Drew explained. “It is a lot of stress but it’s kind of self induced.”
Blakelynn Colclasure noted much of the same reaction: “You just practice so hard but once you get into your routine, everything is okay. It’s like you worry about all of it for nothing.”
The duo All-Americans said the whole experience was good and they really liked the water park.
“It was great for the stress,” Drew admitted with a laugh.
Mrs. Davis concluded by saying this: “I would like to thank Candy Fairbanks and Oscar and Bridggie Mays for their help in transportation and supervision of the girls. These parents gave a week of their time to support the squad and it is greatly appreciated.”
