A Total of 38 Candidates Qualify Locally for Election

The final day of qualifying for the October 2, 2010 elections ended today with a total of 38 qualified candidates with nine of those coming on the last day of qualifying.

In Friday’s qualifying; in School Board District 5 seat Cynthia Brown qualified against incumbent Timothy Hank Tomlinson while Justin Brock Spinks qualified in District 9 for School Board.

District 2 incumbent Stephen Ray Mophett qualified for alderman in the Town of Jonesville.  Opposing Mophett is Tambra C. King in District 2.

Margie F. Price qualified for mayor in Sicily Island against incumbent James “Art” Goode, Jr.
Incumbent Derrick Frazier qualified for Sicily Island Alderman as well as Walter “Pot” Krause and Linda J. Kerry.  Three will be elected to the Alderman position. 

Richard A. “Doll” Hatten qualified for Chief of Police in Harrisonburg.

Of the nine school board seats up for election only Districts 5, 7, and 9 will have to go to the polls. District incumbents in Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 drew no opposition while newcomer Mike Davis takes District 6 without opposition.

District 9, vacated by School Board President Wayne Sanders who chose not to run again, will have newcomers Katie Adams face Justin Spinks.

The only other opposition is in District 5 where incumbent Tim Tomlinson will face newcomer Cynthia Brown.

Without Harrisonburg Chief of Police Joe Cook running for re-election former Harrisonburg Alderman Doll Hatten will face Lyndell Atkins for Chief of Police.

In the Mayor’s races only incumbent Mike Tubre drew no opposition while in Sicily Island incumbent Art Goode will face Margie Price and Jonesville Mayor Hiram Evans will go up against former Mayor Mike Wilson.

The Harrisonburg and Sicily Island Aldermen races have two incumbents face two challengers for three seats in each town.

In Sicily Island incumbents Donald Ashley and Derrick Frazier will get challenged by political veteran Walter “Pot” Krause and Linda Kerry.

Harrisonburg incumbents Greg Terry and Charles Watson face Harold Sones and Louis “Five-O” Hatten.

The Jonesville Alderman race looks to be some of the most heated races as all five incumbents drew opposition.

In District 1 incumbent Jackie Rouse faces former Jonesville Chief of Police Benny Vault Jr. and District 2 incumbent Stephen Mophett runs against Tambra King. District 3 incumbent Josie Bullitts faces newcomer Melissa Griffin and District 5 has incumbent Tommy Branch drawing Freddie Smith.

District 4 incumbent Loria Hollins will face two challengers in Catina Branch and Cashauna Smith.
The Primary Election is set for Saturday, October 2 and General Election for Tuesday, November 2. 

***In the Harrisonburg and Sicily Island Aldermen races these seats are AT LARGE. The Election Code that refers to AT LARGE - Short version:  Three to be elected.  Each candidate has to have majority vote in Primary to win.
