Making Wise Choices Makes Life Easier

Sunday, July 18, 2010 - Jan McLain

Have you ever pondered what the most repetitive thing that we do is? Think about it. We make choices. Many of them require no conscious thought. From what time to get up, to what time to go to bed, we are always making decisions.

In the overall scheme of things, what we have for breakfast or what outfit we wear to school, work, or play probably won't matter much. Decisions that determine our happiness, the success or failure of our lives on Earth, and our final destination are of utmost importance.

The ramifications of making wise choices cannot be over emphasized.

We should teach our children at an early age the importance of decision making. They need to learn that choices and actions have consequences. One single bad decision can adversely affect your life forever. Systematically making wise choices makes life easier.

Some people think that Biblical principles are obsolete or no longer important. I beg to differ. Since the beginning, God has planned and wanted the best for his children.  "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jer. 29:11). Adam and Eve chose not to obey Him. That was the first mistake ever made. We are still reaping the consequences of their choice.

To choose to live for God and let Him direct our choices is the most important decision we can make.  Deut. 28:1-14 tells us the consequences of following God. The consequences of not following God begin in verse 15.  He has set before us life and death, blessings and curses. He wants us to choose life  (Deut. 30:19).

We need to do everything in our power to right the wrongs that we have done that have hurt others. It is important to recognize that all of us have made bad choices in the past. The good news is that we can begin right now making wise decisions. God gave us only Ten Commandments to govern our lives. Obeying them is his blueprint for success.

Remember the bracelets with WWJD (what would Jesus do) on them? That is the most significant question in helping us decide on a course of action. Would Jesus join us in the thing we have planned to do? Would He approve of our decision? The answer to the WWJD  question will ALWAYS point us in the right direction.

Training ourselves to make wise decisions is an important habit to acquire. As with anything, the more we practice it the easier it becomes.  Ignoring peer pressure regardless of our age is all important. Don't follow the crowd. Lead the crowd!
