Harrisonburg FBC Enjoys 4th of July Spectacular

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 - David W. Ryan

If it wasn’t the mounds of golden fried catfish, surely the rows of dessert filled tables would have been to your liking. Into fun and games, how about a bike and trike patriotic parade or a good old fashioned watermelon seed spitting contest?

It was the 4th of July after all, so how about some fireworks, a singing and patriotic message tied to the church?

This was all yours for taking at the Harrisonburg First Baptist Church’s 1st Annual 4th of July Spectacular Sunday night.

“We had roughly 150 people come and celebrate the birth of our nation with us,” Pastor Cory Bruce said. “We had tons of food, a wonderful time of praise and worship and a 10 minute fireworks show that everyone just loved!

“For our first time doing something like this, I think it went really well,” said Pastor Bruce. “We could’ve organized it a little better, but I think by next year we will have the kinks worked out.”

Bruce said everyone is looking forward to making this an annual event that the entire community can rally behind and come together for.

“I delivered a message entitled Strength of our Nation and talked about how, Who has truly made our nation great,” the Pastor explained. “Some might say it was the founding fathers who crafted our Constitution and laws that make us the greatest nation on earth, others might say it’s the brave men and women who have fought and died in our nations wars, which helped secure our freedom...but ultimately the ONE who has made our nation great is God.

“If it weren’t for His hand of blessing, if it weren’t for His inspired word, our founding fathers wouldn’t have been able to do what they did and the men and women of our nation’s military would have had nothing to fight for. So God should get all the praise and all the glory for what America is and stands for.

“But in the 234 years since our founding, we as a nation have drifted away from the things of God that have made us great.”

Pastor Bruce said his message was simply a reminder to the people of Harrisonburg what our nation will be tomorrow begins in the home. And if we create and establish godly homes, we will send out into the world godly children who can help turn the heart of our nation back towards the things of God.

“So the future strength of our nation depends on godly parents, creating godly homes and raising godly children.”

Amen!

Robert Bradley tries to entice Ms. Bonita Hawthorne to try a few more pieces of fish. Tempting as it was, she passed and Robert continues to pass out fish.
Karla McGuffee was one of the many hostesses for the event. Here she is making plates for those unable to attend the event.
Rev. Cory Bruce's twin children Cooper in front and Madison are ready to ride in the bike and trike patriotic parade.
Travis Morris was one of the two Bike winners.
And Ty Blankenship was the other Bike winner.
Braden McGuffee is getting antsy and just wants to drive his patroitic themed John Deere some where. In the background Dad, Lee McGuffee can't bare to watch.
Jack Routon was the proud winner of the watermelon seed spitting contest, sending his seed 21 feet through the air.
