Corbin Carpenter Heads Back to the National Finals Rodeo

Saturday, July 10, 2010 - David W. Ryan

As most everyone in Catahoula Parish will recall on July 25, 2008, Jonesville’s Corbin Carpenter was seriously injured during the bull riding competition at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Farmington, New Mexico. At first doctors feared Corbin would never walk again.

Against all odds and the doubts of several doctors, two months later, through prayer, positive thought, and rigorous physical therapy, Corbin walked out of the Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation.

After a lot more hard work and more physical rehabilitation in Jonesville, Corbin was strong enough to attend the National High School Rodeo Finals the next year but was unable to compete.

Now, less than two years later, Corbin is back to complete.

By the time most of you read this Corbin will be competing in the International Finals Youth Rodeo (IFYR) in Shawnee, Okla., July 12-17, representing Bloomer Trailers’ High School Rodeo Team in team roping and serving as team captain for the second year. This is the fourth year Corbin has competed at the IFYR and last year Bloomer Trailers’ team won the rodeo.

The following week July 18-24, Corbin will be in Gillette, Wyoming competing in the National High School Rodeo Finals in what has to be a bittersweet moment.

So how will it feel to be back and this time compete.

“Honestly, I don’t think about it,” Corbin said frankly of the bull wreck that nearly ended his life during the National Finals. “I just go out and do the best I can and give it everything I have.”

As if walking again wasn’t big enough of a challenge, Corbin made it to the National Finals this year by pulling off another amazing accomplishment. Corbin qualified for the National Finals in “cutting” which requires tremendous balance as you sit atop a horse going top end speed to get ahead of a cow to cut it from the herd.  Then the rider and horse work in unison to keep the cow in a straight line – lots of back and forth, lots of balance.

And while all his state competition started cutting in September, Corbin didn’t start competing until February. For a young man less than two years removed from not walking again, could he pick a bigger challenge?

So with all the challenges faced and obstacles hurdled is there anything Corbin would like to change?

“Well, I sure would try to hang on to that second bull a little better,” Corbin said with a laugh referring to his 2008 bull riding experience. However, other than that Corbin says, “Everything is good when you look at it the right way and I sure enjoy what I do.”

  • ALL IN THE FAMILY

While Corbin basks in the spotlight at two national events, hot on his heels is his little brother Colt who is a budding rodeo star in his own right. Colt competed this past year in the Louisiana High School Rodeo –Wrangler Division Rodeo (LHSHR-WD) state finals July 4-6.

Colt qualified for state finals rodeo in three events including Chute dogging (junior high version of steer wrestling) where he finished 8th place in the short round and 10th place for the year overall.  He also competed in ribbon roping with partner, Jessi White of Jonesville. Colt competed in team roping as the heeler with Brodi Hayes from Alexandria.

The 12 year old is a 6th grader at Temple Christian Academy in Jena and has been rodeoing since he was four years old. He has won six champion All-Around saddles and numerous belt buckles and trophies.

Colt was awarded Most Outstanding Christian Character at Temple Christian Academy in 2009. The staff at Temple said Colt was chosen for this award because he is very caring of others, he has a Christ like attitude; never wants to hurt anybody's feelings or leave anyone out.

Jonesville's Corbin Carpenter will be competing again in the National High School Rodeo Finals this time in "Cutting", July 18-24, in Gillette, Wyoming.
