Jonesville Belles Fall in the Finals to Winnsboro 3-0

Saturday, July 10, 2010 - David W. Ryan

Live by the sword – die by the sword is an old metaphorical expression the Jonesville Belles played with. The Belles rode the “small ball” to three consecutive wins including an impressive 3-2 win over host Winnsboro. However, in the end, they lost using “small ball” as Winnsboro came through the losers bracket to win the District 5 tournament 3-0 over Jonesville Thursday night.

“After the first three games out small ball just completely left us,” Head Coach Micah Hughes said. “We couldn’t lay down a good bunt when we needed it and our base running inexperience really caught up to us. We made more errors tonight that we did in the rest of the tournament combined.”

But Coach Hughes admitted he was extremely proud of the girls and how far they had come in the three weeks of practice leading up to the tournament. He especially praised his pitchers and noted in five tournament games they had give up five earned runs. Two of his pitchers Emilee Smith and Lacee Book gave up no earned runs for the tournament.

“Those girls worked really hard and did everything we asked them to do,” Coach Hughes said in conclusion. “We’re young and we’ll be back a little better next year.”

The Jonesville Belles won 2nd place in the District 5 Tournament held in Winnsboro. The girls went 3-2 in the tournament and beat eventual champion Winnsboro 3-2 earlier in the tournament. Kneeling from left Lacee Book, Micahla Hughes, Emilee Smith, and Blake Colclasure. Back row is Shay Boothe, Kassidy Gunn, Coach Micah Hughes, Emma Barker, Chianne McCarthy, Zakedria Smith, Coach Kirby King, Nikki Harbor, Kaley Hughes, Whitney Taunton and Coach Houston Book.
